It was more work than I imagined. Which brings me to something I’m still learning about myself.
My Productivity Profile
I talk a lot about types in this newsletter. But type is only half of your productivity profile. The other half is your path.
Here’s mine:
My type: Architect. My strength: I see patterns. I build systems. I can spot connections others miss and turn chaos into frameworks. My trap: over-engineering. Building systems when I should be running them. Adding complexity when simplicity would do.
My path: Driver (evolved from Seeker). I started as a Seeker—someone who’d tried everything and nothing stuck. I spent years searching for the right fit. Now I’m a Driver. I’ve found systems that work. The work isn’t building from scratch anymore. It’s making what I have lighter. Simpler. More sustainable.
The two paths:
- Seeker: “I’ve tried everything. Nothing sticks.” Still searching for the right fit.
- Driver: “I get things done, but it’s heavier than it should be.” System works, but it drains more than it should.
Same type, different starting point. An Architect Seeker needs to build something that runs. An Architect Driver needs to stop rebuilding what already works.
My personal trap (the one that doesn’t show up on the quiz)
I chronically underestimate effort.
Every project takes longer than I expect. Every launch is “more work than I imagined.” It’s a pattern I’m still working on. Curious to hear any tips you can share with me…
This year, I’m tracking it. And I’m making a pledge: offer more targeted value, not just more content.
Living Profit (the pledge behind the pledge)
Here’s how I’m measuring “targeted value.”
I use a framework called Living Profit—three buckets that track what matters:
- Energy: Sleep, health, recovery. The fuel for everything else.
- Relationships: The people who matter. Presence, not just proximity.
- Opportunity: Work, learning, growth. What you ship and what it opens.
The goal: keep all three buckets above 5/10. No bucket chronically drained to fund another.
My old pattern was classic Architect: 9/10 on Opportunity (always building), 4/10 on Energy (always tired), 5/10 on Relationships (always “almost done”).
This year, I’m rebalancing. More targeted newsletters = better Opportunity deposits. Less over-engineering = more Energy preserved. Shorter, more valuable = respecting your time and mine.
The Four Types (quick reference)
Each type has a strength and a trap:
- Architect (that’s me): Strength = seeing patterns, building systems. Trap = over-engineering.
- Surfer: Strength = adaptability, riding energy waves. Trap = scatter. Ideas everywhere, findable nowhere.
- Keeper: Strength = reliability, rock-solid consistency. Trap = rigidity. When the routine can’t flex, it breaks.
- Pilot: Strength = agility, execution under pressure. Trap = too many open loops. Saying yes faster than you can deliver.
