The month-six test

Open the AI tool you bought six months ago — not the shiny one you started last week, the one you were excited about in the spring. Use it on a real task. Then answer one question honestly: is it better than the day you bought it, or exactly the same?

If it’s exactly the same, you didn’t buy a system. You bought a pile.

Why “the same” is the diagnosis, not the disappointment

Here’s the reframe that takes the sting out. “Exactly the same after six months” isn’t a sign you failed to use the tool well. It’s a sign the tool was built without a way to get better. A static pile can’t pass the month-six test, by construction — no measurement, no way to learn from you, so nothing to improve. You ran a fair test and it failed for structural reasons that have nothing to do with your discipline.

That’s the competence trap: the tool looks competent in any single session, which is exactly what hides the fact that it isn’t going anywhere. Direction is invisible one Tuesday at a time. You only see it when you compare across months.

A system that passes does three things a pile can’t: it measures its output against a standard you set, it keeps every correction, and it shows you what changed and why. Six months of using it leaves you with something sharper than you started — because your corrections accumulated into capability instead of evaporating.

Try-This-Now (≤5 minutes)

  1. Open the AI tool you’ve used longest.
  2. Run a real task you also ran months ago.
  3. Compare the two outputs side by side.
  4. Score it: better, same, or worse? Write the score down.

That’s your baseline — the first measurement in the only test that matters. Stop — this counts.
